Our four-day safari in Masai Mara, Kenya was one amazingly spectacular experience. The animals and the scenery we saw on this trip were almost surreal, and now that we are back home it all feels like a dream.

When you make a trip to Nairobi, Kenya the two places you must visit especially if you are an animal lover is The David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage and The Giraffe Centre. This past August when we went to Kenya that is exactly what we did, we stopped by both these conservation centers where we walked away inspired and happy to do more for the wildlife of this region.
Every time we travel to Kenya to visit Hitesh’s family, I would stop by the Kazuri boutique in Nairobi and pick up a bracelet. Folks, this has to be one of the most heart-warming and the most impactful excursions during our trip to Kenya this past summer. Every time we visit Kenya we always make it a point to stop by The David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage in the Karen neighborhood of Nairobi. And this visit was just as memorable as our previous ones.
After a six-year hiatus, we made a trip back to Kenya this past August for a two-week holiday to visit Hitesh’s family in Mombasa, Kenya. In previous years they visited us here in California, and now it was our turn to go see them.
Many times when I tell friends and family I am going to Kenya, the first question I am asked is, “Is it safe to go to Kenya?” The other questions I get asked are “Where is Kenya vis-à-vis the rest of Africa?” “What is the weather like?” “When is the best time to go?” “What is the political climate like?” So I thought I would take this opportunity to answer a few of these questions before telling you about my trip this past summer to Kenya and all the wonderful places we visited. A Caprese salad with jam? I know it sounds odd, but it tastes really good. I came up with this variation of Caprese salad when we were in Cape Cod visiting our friends Jo and Oliver this past summer. Well, I waited as long as I could to take out all the summer vegetable plants, especially the tomato plants that were looking pretty sad but still had plenty of fruit. I thought the tomatoes would get ripe since we have been getting some 90-degree temperatures lately, but nothing is happening on those bushes, nada. The tomatoes are just sitting happily on the vines, doing absolutely nothing. They are just green, and it looks like time stood still. I couldn’t stand it anymore, and finally this past weekend I harvested all the green tomatoes and chopped down the tomato plants. I noticed with a batch of green tomatoes that we harvested a couple of weeks ago, that when they sit in a bowl indoors they do slowly start ripening. I’ll do the same with this last tomato harvest of the season.
Looking at these green tomatoes I recalled a movie I watched years ago back in 1991 called Fried Green Tomatoes. I remembered liking the movie a lot as it had a great storyline set in Alabama about an unlikely friendship between a young waitress at a local diner and an elderly lady she volunteers to give company to at a Senior Citizen’s Home.
