Visit to the little village of Girona, Spain. The Setting for Game of Thrones

Girona, Spain in the Catalonia region is a charming little village couple hours drive from the city of Barcelona. Girona’s claim to fame is that it was the setting for many of the scenes in the insanely popular series Game of Thrones.

The bridge that is a highlight of the village

Recognize a similarity to another famous building? The one in Paris, France?

The same architect constructed this bridge! This bridge is called the Eiffel bridge. It seems he designed this bridge before the Eiffel Tower and once his name became world renowned, Girona renamed his bridge the Eiffel bridge.

Strolling the alleyways of Girona

Steep steps and hilly alleyways await in this little village. Be prepared to get a solid workout here! You can walk past cafes, restaurants, retail shops, and even a university campus.

Game of Thrones Setting

Walking around the village it is so obvious why Game of Thrones chose this little town as their medieval setting.

Game of Thrones Tourists

Many tourists who come here are part of Game of Thrones tour groups! I saw a guide playing scenes from the series and showing tourists the actual setting in Girona where the scenes were taped.

The charming village of Girona, Spain

If you have a day to spare while exploring Barcelona, a day trip to Girona is a delightful detour to see life outside of the big city.

Girona is a popular destination for Barcelonites who want to get away from the city and stroll in a village set back in time where they can grab lunch, shop local boutiques and stroll the charming village.
