Broccoli Sauté with Turmeric and Asafetida

Broccoli sauté with turmeric and asafetida is the simplest side dish to make with the most delicious of results. Doesn’t take long to cook, tastes amazing, and is healthy as it gets. With just a couple good for you spices broccoli gets a flavor kick making it a wonderful veggie to have as a side dish or serve it along a side daal and rice for a delicious light dinner.

Asafetida adds that uniquely asafetida flavor while turmeric gives the broccoli that golden color, then add a bit of garlic – well because garlic just makes everything taste better, and you get a delicious broccoli stir fry.  This is always a hit in our family and I hope it becomes your new favorite way to eat broccoli.  Give it a try!

Broccoli Sauté with Turmeric and Asafetida

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 lb broccoli florets
  • 4 garlic cloves finely cut
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric
  • 1 tsp asafetida powder
  • Chili powder (optional)
  • Salt
  • Oil

Directions:

  • In a pot heat 2 tbsp oil.  Add the cumin seeds and let them toast in oil for a few seconds. Next add garlic, turmeric and asafetida and toast in the oil for about 2 seconds – do not burn the spices! Immediately add the broccoli and chili powder if using and toss together. Cook broccoli for 5 minutes until broccoli becomes slightly tender but still al-dente.
  • Add salt and mix into the broccoli. Cook for an additional 1-2 minutes.
  • Broccoli sauté is ready. If you like you can add a squeeze of lemon juice for a bit of tang.
