Fig and Onion Tart

Fig and onion tart might sound intimidating but is actually surprisingly easy to make with the most decadent of results. Sweet, salty, cheesy and crispy, this is an intense tart with over the top flavors and oh so good!

Caramelized onions, plump figs and Gruyere cheese all baked in a buttery puff pastry.  Drizzle with honey for a little extra sweetness and you have a really really delicious fig and onion tart that tastes like it came from a specialty caterer! Served in little bite size appetizer pieces or in large squares for lunch, this fig and onion tart will have your guests impressed at your culinary skills 😋😄.

An easy recipe with delicious results

What makes this tart a breeze to make is the frozen puff pastry. What a godsend this is for tart lovers.  Just thaw the dough for 30 minutes, roll it out and then top with cheese and the most delectable sweet and savory fig and caramelized onion mix.  Then bake for 20 to 30 minutes.  It’s that simple.

Caramelized onions ALWAYS taste great

Caramelized onions taste great in anything they are added to, and in this tart when mixed in with sweet plump figs, the flavors are just over-the-top delicious!  Add cheese for good measure and a drizzle of honey for an extra bit of golden sweetness and you get this amazing fig and onion tart.

The best part is you don’t even have to wait for fig season to make it. So go ahead and bake this for an afternoon snack to have with a good cup of tea. Or make it for a light dinner or lunch with a side of green veggies. This is one tart you’ll be making making more than just once.

Fig and Onion Tart

Ingredients:

  • 1 package puff pastry (use 1 sheet) thawed
  • 1 large onion thinly sliced or 2 medium onions
  • 1 cup dried figs cut into pieces or sweet fresh figs in season – about 5-6 cut into quarters
  • 2 – 3 garlic cloves finely minced
  • 1 tsp rosemary
  • 1 1/2 cups gruyere cheese shredded
  • 1/4 cup gorgonzola cheese (optional)
  • Salt and pepper
  • Olive oil

Directions:

  • Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees.
  • In 3 tbsp oil sauté onions and garlic until onions are caramelized about 10-15 minutes.  Add the figs and mix into the onions. Add a pinch of salt and pepper and mix in.
  • Roll puff pastry out into 15-inch length.  Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.  Crimp the edges of the pastry a little.
  • On the puff pastry sprinkle with 1 cup Gruyere cheese. Spread the onion and fig mixture over the cheese. Next evenly distribute the Gorgonzola cheese if using or remainder of the 1/2 cup Gruyere.  Drizzle olive oil.

  • Bake for 25 -30min until puff pastry is golden brown. Fig tart is ready.
  • Sprinkle with fresh rosemary and thyme. Cut into bite size pieces

  • Drizzle with honey and serve as an appetizer or with a salad for a light lunch or dinner.
