June in the Garden 2019

June has been a crazy roller coaster of weather for us here in the Bay Area. We had temperatures in the 90s and 100s and I think we even broke a few records with temps up to 105!  Then the temperatures went back down to our pleasant 70s and 80s. Basically we were all over the place weather wise in June. Despite these fluctuations in temps the garden faired really well.

March in the Garden 2019. The Month of Freesias

March in the Bay Area has given us a preview of spring. We had lots and lots of rain followed by sunny days with warm temperatures in the 60s and even 70s, followed by more rain, and sunny days, followed by more rain and sunny days – you get the pattern.  The warm sunny temperatures brought out heavy pollen days with a few of us suffering miserably with allergies, but the rain following washed the pollen away and gave us some welcome relief, which is when I would walk around my garden to see what’s happening.  I apologize in advance if all my eyes caught were colorful blooms, I am a sucker for glorious colorful flowers. February in the Garden, 2019

February has had crazy wild weather here in the Bay Area.  Cold, rain, and even snow blanketed our hills and mountains this February.  We haven’t had snow in our lower elevations in over 9 years! We went from cold temperatures in the 30s to warmer temperatures in the 60s all in just a few weeks.  Despite the ups and down in temperature the garden did really well. Lots and lots of rainy and stormy days in February made for our gardens not complaining one bit. Here is a look at how the garden faired in February. Continue reading February in the Garden, 2019

November in the Garden

November in the garden was an interesting one for us here in the Bay Area.  We had days of warm weather, followed by chilly temperatures in the 30s, 40, 50s and 60s, followed by ten days of the worst air quality caused by the California wildfires, followed by rain and sunny clear skies.  Despite our rollercoaster of a weather ride, the garden faired really well. Drying Herbs at Home 🌿

When I visited my sister Banu in Philadelphia a while back I saw her use this amazing selection of dried herbs for a vegetarian chili she was making.  The herb bottles were beautifully labeled and the herbs dried to perfection. My other sister Shobha and I looked at these beautiful herbs in awe; they looked like Banu had bought them from a specialty food shop, only to find out that Banu dried them all herself at home.
