It’s springtime and if you have herbs starting to sprout and blossoms peeking through, this homemade bread is a wonderful way to showcase these herbs and blossoms.
The inspiration
My daughter Sri made these beautifully decorated homemade breads when she had a few friends over for lunch in the garden recently. A fun project for everyone to participate in, as she had them pick the herbs and edible blossoms, and then decorate the dough before baking.
About the recipe
The recipe is simple, like any homemade bread recipe this too uses active dry yeast. The fun part is decorating with fresh herbs and edible flowers from the garden. The herbs flavor the bread and add fabulous aroma, and the blossoms add there unique color and Je ne sais quoi 💐.
Here is a recipe for beautiful decorated and delicious homemade bread courtesy of daughter Sri.
Herb and Flower Homemade Bread
recipe courtesy of Sri
Ingredients:
3 and a half cups bread flour
1 tbsp salt
2 cups warm water
1 packet active dry yeast
For flavoring:
5-6 tablespoons of your favorite herbs (thyme, rosemary etc). Plus edible flowers such as nasturtiums and pansies
OR for jalapeno cheddar bread:
2 cups cheddar cheese
2 jalapeños (remove seeds and finely dice)
Directions:
Mix together bread flour, salt, and warm water plus dry yeast (follow directions on yeast packet before adding). Cover with cloth and let rise for an hour. If making jalapeno bread, add the jalapeno and cheddar to the flour mixture.
After an hour remove cloth and fold dough. Cover with cloth again and let the dough rise for another 30 minutes.
Roll dough into 12inch round and decorate with herbs and flowers. Brush a Dutch oven pan with olive oil. Line the pan with parchment paper then place the dough on top.
Bake at 425 degrees for 30 minutes with lid on. Remove lid and bake for additional 20 minutes. Take out of oven and let cool before slicing and serving with butter.
Will definitely try
This is so beautiful! I’m definitely making this for our next gathering.
I know right? the homemeade bread tastes great too! We do eat with our eyes first and why not make bread look as beautiful as it tastes 💕
It could serve double duty as the centerpiece!
